Walk in the Light

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”—John 8:12

“Do As I Do. Walk In the Light.”

These were the words that I heard going through my head and heart a few weeks ago when I woke up in the morning. I don’t know why, I wasn’t dreaming, but that is what I heard, and I can only attribute it to Jesus speaking to me. I pondered the words through the day, wrote them on my prayer chart, and I face them again this morning.

This week has felt so dark as more information has come out about the Las Vegas massacre, and yesterday tears stung my eyes as I saw the pictures of the 40+ dead and read some of the information about them. What beautiful, generous, loving people, who are no more. My heart aches for them, their families, and our grieving nation.

That is why I focus today on these words of Jesus— Jesus is the light. We can look toward Him when our world gets dark. We do not have to choose to live in darkness, but we can choose to live in the light.

The words I heard in my heart tell me this—-Jesus wants us to walk in the light. He wants us to do as He does. When we turn our eyes to Him and focus on Him, the darkness has to flee. It cannot withstand the force and power of His immense light. So we do as He does. We walk in the light. Darkness can easily pull us down, but when we focus on Him, He gives us the power over the darkness.

How do we walk in the light? I think the first priority is prayer. Pray to walk in the light. Pray to follow Jesus. Pray for concerns. Second—check our own hearts for darkness and confess those areas that need to change. Third—focus on doing good. Be kind. Be caring. Be loving. Show forgiveness. Serve others. As we focus on doing good things, the light will shine. Ultimately, pray to Jesus to show you the light and how to walk in it.

We have a hurting suffering world, that desperately needs the light of Christ’s love. How might He be calling you to “Do as I do, walk in the light” today?

Prayer–“Lord Jesus, You are the light that conquers darkness. Bring me into your incredible light, forgive my sins, and set me on the right path to walk with You. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
